Making Youtube Thumbnails With Free Programs

So you are trying to craft some (hopefully) eye-popping thumbnails? As the creator behind those of my friend and collaborator Vileshinobi’s YouTube channel, I’here to give you a breakdown of my workflow. Let’s dive in!

  1. Blender: To manipulate the Scene, the protagonist, and the lightning source.
  2. AI Gen: Using many project to generate assets, textures and background Images (Midjourney, Dall-e, Playground, Gliff, ect).
  3. Photopea: An online alternative to Photoshop for image editing.
  4. Custom Fonts: Because it’s what makes everything stick together.
  • Load up some 3d assets into blender. (C00 licensing or your own)
  • Set up lighting and camera angles for dynamic compositions.
  • Render the scene with a transparent background for flexibility

LOAD ASSETS

ADD LIGHTS AND CAMS

SET TRANSPARENT BACKGROUND

DIRECT THE SCENE, THEN RENDER

  • Drop that Blender masterpiece into Photopea
  • Slap on a background that makes your eyes pop
  • Tweak those colors until they’re chef’s kiss
  • Add some sparkle with effects that’ll make your thumbnail shine brighter than a diamond
  • Bust out those custom fonts that are so Vileshinobi
  • Keep the text short and sweet – ain’t nobody got time to read an essay
  • Make sure those words pop harder than popcorn
  • Sprinkle in some design flair to tie it all together
  • Size that bad boy to YouTube’s sweet spot (1280×720 pixels)
  • Save it in a format that won’t make YouTube throw a fit (.jpg or .png)
